It's funny, but I think that his background as an FG is almost pushed from his consciousness on this one - he is thinking in terms of the department's long-term interests, and for the most part, he is right. I just think that sometimes he is a bit unaware of the interpersonal aspects of some things that he does, and in this instance those ramifications really could cause the long-term approach to sabotage itself.

We're getting a lot of those emails (the Apu ones you mentioned); those typically go into the recycle bin immediately. Truth be told, we have to have some way of screening the number of applicants down to a manageable one for interviews, so we typically start with Caribbean grads among the FGs - we're more familliar with the schools, and they often do some of their clinical training in the U.S., which gives us a better basis for comparison.
