The undercutting the boss thing is an angle I thought about quite a bit. In the end, I explained it to him in terms of common ultimate interests, and told him that in service of that long-term interest, I felt it was useful for the FGs to see me standing up to the boss on their behalf. He seemed to understand the strategy involved, but only time will tell whether it really bothered him.
