Re: Archaeopteryx: The Interview
by Archaeopteryx

Destruction of our environment coupled with overpopulation is going to ruin us. Sooner rather than later. I used to assume humanity would outlive my lifespan. I'm not so sure now.

I like cheapo hot dogs, young girls in summer clothes, bats and nighthawks flying around the lights, roasted peanuts, the feel of a cold beer can in my hand. What's not to like?

My favorite beers are IPAs. They're bitter and tasty. I don't care for many stouts--I know it's sacrilege, but I don't much like Guiness. There's a beer-like beverage called "Budweiser" that I don't care for at all--it has no flavor whatsoever.

I have no clue as to why sexual maturity is coming earlier. I blame Bush.

Most genes are pleiotropic--they have more than one effect on the organism that gets them. A gene that causes poor eyesight, for example, might also endow its owner with increased intelligence. Formerly, those with bad eyesight were quickly culled from the population, so the "good" effects of the gene were also culled. Also, even if a gene has only one effect, there's no telling whether or not a "bad" effect might turn good later on. Long story short--increased genetic variation is good for a population in the long run, so anything that allows us to preserve genetic variation in humans has the potential to be good in humans.
