Why does Dad get ANY compassion from his daughters? He CLEARLY was only thinking about his own feelings when all of this went down 10 years ago

So what is the difference between the father thinking only of his feelings when this went down and the daughters now thinking only of their feelings? The one won't even talk to him and the other one is only cordial to him because they are hurt by something that he did to their mother years ago. Wouldn't it be great if we were all perfect and never made any mistakes in our lives? Then no-one would have to have compassion and forgive anyone for anything.
