I am teaching, and trying to get tenure, so I don't have a lot of time to spend with this poem. I 'm growing more doubtful about the fishing -- but I don't think the present form is beyond comprehension (the fact that I don't understand something hardly makes it incomprehensible)-- a circular set of transformations seawater -- pain -- grandfather -- branches -- fingers -- girl -- seawater.

East Asian languages are highly reliant on noun phrases -- maybe you and I just see them everywhere now.
