Storytelling is different in movies than in novels. In a novel you have the added advantage of point of view. You can present your character as having certain a priori negative values and attitudes without it seeming like propaganda. Perhaps we have been so victimized as a culture by propaganda that we're suspicious of any movie.

But the issue here should be the attitudes of the characters, not the filmmakers. Artists need to be allowed to be transgressive, even if they transgress against political correctness. Storytelling is a private, intimate process by which one part of the psyche conflicts with another. It rarely has anything to do with the world at large.
