Like I said, it's the stereotype that short haired girls are lesbian, a stereotype that exists because long hair signals female, short hair male. I'm not saying it's right, but those are the signals that have been sent for the last 2000 years. (Example: 1 Timothy -- Paul tells the women to grow it out and the men to chop it off.) No, short haired gals are not all lesbians. No, long haired men are not all gay. But flaunting long established norms sends a message, and it's foolish to pretend otherwise. Should that message be sent and interpreted? That's a different question. Personally I hate long hair on men. Either it's long because they don't care (with corresponding yuckiness) or because they're obsessed with appearance. The last thing I want is a man who wants to mimic obnoxious behaviors of women -- in which I include obsession over appearance.
