Haines: The Cliche Candidate?

Reading John Dickerson's peice I can't help but wonder if Haines is some ancillary character from a movie. If he were a superheor it seems it would be to have time tested cliche for every situation. Seems like he makes for an interesting character study, but I'm rather relieved the chances of the Folksy State of the Union littered with rhyming bits of wisdom is rather low.
What motivates these types of candidates to even enter the races I wonder. You follow me?
