Re: "Religion" - for Denny (and Jonathan Swift)

HUMANS AND RELIGION
By D_deridex the Romulan
(Reworked from a prose report to the Praetor)

Humans have an annoying way
of putting idols upon pedestals
and then knocking them off.
It's how they themselves describe it.
All that really changes
is the sophistication of the artwork
and the caliber of the weaponry
that they direct against it.
Left to themselves long enough,
I expect them to make their idols cybernetic
and their weapons antimatter.
(What am I saying?
They already have done so in their fiction.)

I do know one Human
who sees all this as I do,
if not by any brand of Vulcan logic
or Romulan rectitude.
Sometimes I've wondered
how his fellow Humans stand him.
Over our most recent lunch,
he confessed that some no longer do,
yet he was mostly untroubled by it.
I was naturally curious to learn the reason.
"Religion worth having, Commander,
is not something you come to grasp,
it's something that comes to grasp you."
"And how do you tell the difference?"
The Human turned inward before replying:
"When the world starts making so much sense
that you can learn to love it despite itself."
