You ought to read more poetry - like "Confessions of the Mask" by David Lehman.

Here is but one example form that poem - out of about 10 -

"These are the memories of a man without a past.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Therefore, let us sport us while we may.
These are the reveries of a man who climbed the mast."

The two most obvious poetic references here are "Oh, I kept the first for another day!" from "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost and a paraphrase of "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may" from "To the Virgins to Make Much of Time" by Robert Herrick.
