As another poster said, she was someone who tried to use her power as a public figure for good. For one, she was one of the first people to publicly embrace someone with aids, and treat those afflicted with it as people and not as lepers. Given that she lived her life in a fishbowl as so many celebrities do, and comparing her with the Paris and Nicoles of our day, I for one admire how she dealt with that scrutiny, and how she used her celebrity to make a positive impact on those who weren't blessed with the comfort and money she was born and married into.
