A wise friend of mine once observed that "you can make a lot of money as a debunker in this country". Our national cynicism knows no bounds. And while I fervently agree with the "author" of this piece that there is an often unbridled sentiment to rush to apocalyptic conclusions in these troubled times, I also try to exercise a little more journalistic integrity than Slate's preference for journalistic hubris.
Case in point: If you're REALLY interested in getting past the apocalyptic fervor AND the journalistic cynicism, I recommend you start with a rather remarkable little book called The Mayan Prophecy: Path Beyond Technology written by Jose Arguellles. That's DR. Jose Arguelles. The forward is written by another PhD, the venerable theoretical physicist, Brian Swimme. I doubt the debunking author has ever heard of either of these two gentlemen because, if he had, he might have shown a skosh more humility before callously throwing out the baby with the bathwater.
I won't argue the fine points on a blog site such as this, but IF you still have an inquisitive mind that hasn't been overwhelmed by the blather of the debunkers, then take a look. What do you have to lose? Hmmm, now there's a GOOD question.
