Re: The American Wife

My husband is also hispanic, but he already knew English. I had taken 4 yrs of Spanish in high school ( a long time ago) and as they say "If you don't use it, you lose it." I felt out of the loop whenever they spoke Spanish. I could maybe pick out a word here or there, but not enough to get in the conversation.

It's great that your husband and his family didn't mind if you read or did puzzles while you visited. Unfortunately, that would've been considered rude, however, I was expected to just sit there like a big lump.

I tried to learn more Spanish, but it's very hard when he won't help me (I'm sure your husband was more than happy to help you.) and yes, he did laugh at me when I did try to speak it. He would also constantly interrupt me whenever I tried learning it which lead me to believe that he really doesn't want me to learn it.

I asked these questions in another reply:

How would they feel if you invited one of your in-laws to your home and seated him/her in the Living Room and you walked into another room and spoke with other people and left them alone? Would they feel ignored? Would they think it's rude?

Another thing is you have proper Spanish, Mexican, and Spanglish, which is usually used by Puerto Ricans.

Just as an example, my girlfriend and her family went to Mexico--she wanted chocolate cake. Well, her father stopped at a bakery and stated he wanted a piece of cake in how he would normally say it. The baker understood it as--he thought he wanted a piece of ass. Her father quickly realized his mistake and rephrased it correctly.

To state that since your husband learned English to start dating you was his decision and if he lived here, he needed to learn it anyways.
