It's not a "western style democracy." It's a "Jewish State." That's why the idea of a one state solution is a non-starter for Israel, because if the land in question were democratically controlled by the people who live there, the best they could hope for would be a secular state, and, more likely, now that they've weakened Fatah relative to Hamas, they'd get a Muslim one.
And that's why right-wingers in Israel are ginning up fear of the non-Jewish birth rate and trying to get people to talk seriously about Arab expulsion or disenfranchisement.
One way to make a U.S. partisan of Israel deeply uncomfortable is to ask if, forced to choose, he/she would choose a democratic state or a Jewish one. (I don't think the discomfort is evil, in and of itself. Thoughtful Palestinians might very well become uncomfortable if asked to choose between democratic and Muslim government. The point is that this discomfort and fear fuels the hatred and violence and keeps more irenic people on both sides from working out a solution.)
