The recent culture gabfest podcast commenting on food/gardening news leads me to believe that the panelists have no primary knowledge of this topic, and were going off embarrassingly ignorant of what raising your own food is all about, what real food is, and the significance of the Obama's garden.
Some advice: don't bring ketchup to the potluck, serve it with ripple chips and then dip that in strawberry soda. Wouldn't be good.
