It amazes me how adamant anti-smokers are about cigarettes. They are content only with a complete win-lose situation. Why shouldn't smokers have bars and restaurants they can frequent? Isn't that what America is about - freedom and choices? Are people really so selfish and ignorant that they believe the world should fully abide by their morals alone?
I despise the massive amounts of sexuality that pervades our society. I think it contributes to the objectification of and violence towards women. I don't think I should have to look at naked, or even half-naked women while I'm at a magazine stand, watching television, or using the Internet. Yet I am bombarded with these images on a continuous basis. However, I don't believe the rest of the world should be stripped of their ability to access it. I just think that such material should be limited to content-specific stores and optional channels/websites.
It is also astonishing that smoking is targeted so heavily while drinking is seemingly acceptable. Yet as discussed in the primary article, drinking has many negative consequences, including violence and death. Not to mention that drinkers can frequently become loud and annoying, which to me is just as big of a public nuisance as smoke. Again, it doesn't mean that I would or should be able to remove alcohol from the places I might go just because they might bother me while I'm eating or kill me on the way home.
I also often wonder if these antismokers worry about the pollution which their vehicles are producing or if they are active in ensuring that factory emissions are very strictly controlled. Most people seem quick to point out how others are harming the world, but yet don't tend to look at their own behavior.
I think people need to get off of their high horses and understand that everyone, including themselves, is doing something that annoys and harms everyone else. That is the price we pay to live in this world. You deal with someone's smoke, they deal with the moron riding their bumper at 70 mph, that person deals with the drunk swerving in the lane next to them, and on and on.
Live your life to the best of your ability and leave everyone else to live their own.
