Re: yes, YOU 'mentioned' reparations for slaveowners

but, you still negate the issue of the tariffs which the Morrill doubled to 48%... and a few other 'moral' ditties; the 3/5ths compromise, and blacks laws in the land of lincoln and the territories...

I negated nothing; I addressed your tariffs fetish which fails the Patrick Henry test of taxation without representation. Your bringing up the 3/5ths compromise, the state of Northern blacks, the racism behind the "Free Soil" slogan and white society in general is just you moving your goal posts.

oh and by the way, the Morrill Act passed in the house - '59-'60 session before the election/secession. the GOP had taken control in the 50's of the house and was in control for that session of the 36th congress, DEMS controlled the senate. two days b4 the '60 inauguration 3/4/1861, 14 senators left w/the seceding states... and one sen. frm TN left the day after, so there was no 50/50 split of the senate by 3/2, and remaining northern congressional dems voted to protect their geographic interests; namely steel, transportation and industry.

No kidding there wasn't a 50-50 split in the Senate on the Morrill Tariff - because, as I already pointed out, the Secessionists had already left the Senate in Northern hands. A text-book self-fulfilling prophecy and self-sabotage.
