Thanks, Fred. The more I reread the poem the greater sense I get of a suspension of belief, what Arnold called "the dialogue of the mind with itself." All such poems are staged encounters. and this one gives equal weight to the dark skepticism of the speaker and the almost unfathomable faith he projects onto the song of the bird, itself showing the ravages of time.
