We need to relearn to store food by canning or freezing

If by joining a CSA you wanted to get closer to the land and to your food you need to acknowledge that veggies and every other food has a season and store your surplus food past that season.
One of the best things you can do is 'can' or jar the surplus we get at harvest time so that you'll have fruits and veggies that you know about once winter comes and your CSA share starts delivering nothing.
Canning is easy and while it takes time you can do much of it while watching the TV or reading or cleaning up from dinner. Get your self an old cookbook and dig through the recipes. I have an old one that's a collection of Mennonite recipes and it would be perfect - it has recipes that match the season. My faves are pickled watermelon rind from the summer and apples and green tomatoes from the fall.
The other thing is to embrace soups - they freeze well and on cold days nothing's better than a velvety squash soup. 99 cents for the squash and a quart of broth and you have a quick meal the kids love. (i'm cheap / eco-friendly enought to make sure my thanksgiving turkey remains get turned into broth)
