Here's my take:

They are CELEBRITIES.

NOT politicians, generals, attorneys, brain surgeons or construction workers....

They do their jobs very well, at least that is my opinion, considering we put out more music, movies, books, etc. than any other nation.

That said, I think too many people give then way too much credit/offense for the things they say.

Many on the Left treat the utterence of a "Celebrity" as if it was brought down the Mountain!

Many on the Right get so pissed off, they won't go watch a movie or concert because of what the entertainer said.

Both sides are kinda silly. For my part, I base my judgement on their entertainment skills on their entertainment skills!

Alec Baldwin is a good example: He has said a LOT that would piss of a "rightie." It has pissed me off. BUT...if one watches his series with SWEET AND HOT Tina Fey, I challenge them not to laugh at his antics. Now he is not the "greatest" actor in my opinion, but I do think he has far better skills than much of the work he has done (His biggest career mistake was not continuing as "Jack Ryan" in the other Clancy movies....I love Harrison Ford, but, to me, Baldwin was the ultimate Jack Ryan....)

And what if John Lennon were still around? I doubt he and I would agree much on politics, but, boy, oh boy, what I would do to see him in concert!
