I saw the preview of W. on the 10/9/08 episode of the Colbert Report
(colbertnation.com or hulu.com). Not only did Stone cast an OLD man to
play John, but he slaughtered John's words. His words. It's like
slaughtering Shakespeare. The clip begins
JOHN: Thank you sir. Mr. President, After 9/11,
what would you say your biggest mistake would be, and what lessons
have you learned from it?
THE PRESIDENT: I wish you would have given me this written before hand, so I could prepare for it. blah blah blah.
The actual press conference was held in the East Room and went
JOHN: Thank you, Mr. President. In the last campaign, you were
asked a question about the biggest mistake you'd made in your life, and
you used to like to joke that it was trading Sammy Sosa. You've looked
back before 9/11 for what mistakes might have been made. After 9/11,
what would your biggest mistake be, would you say, and what lessons
have you learned from it?
THE PRESIDENT: I wish you would have given me this written
question ahead of time, so I could plan for it. (Laughter.) John, I'm
sure historians will look back and say, gosh, he could have done it
better this way, or that way. You know, I just -- I'm sure something
will pop into my head here in the midst of this press conference, with
all the pressure of trying to come up with an answer, but it hadn't
yet.

The real question is, Who should have played John in the movie? Matthew McConaughey for John's good looks? Neil Patrick Harris for John's boyish charm? Or David Hyde Pierce for John's neurosis? Emily jokingly thought of Robert Redford playing John in a movie. No word if there is a John character in Judith Miller movie "Nothing But the Truth".
