mean, moody, and magnificent

I think that was first said of Brando. But it fit Newman. That is what made him a star. He did not become a star because of philanthropy much less because of lefty politics. he had sex appeal to burn, he had that threat element, without which, no male actor becomes a sex symbol, and I am thankful that he became a star in the days when leading men were not allowed to be bad guys because he would have made being the bad guy look pretty good. In fact he did in HUD, where the character he played tried to rape someone. He was supposed to be the despised guy, but in the end no one remembers the good guy's homilies. They just remember that intense gaze (and the movie was black and white too) and that scornful upper lip, reminiscent of Elvis, and the nose straight from a greek vase. I'm getting carried away.
