Anse, it might be a regional thing. Texas is so much different from the rest of the country - it is like another country.
Another personal experience - when I was a freelance photographer, I photographed a convention of Hispanic publications. I was astonished at the number of mexican descent newspaper that were spread across the US. Not puetro rican, cuban and south americans but true descendents from mexican immigrants. IMHO, I think there are those (anglos and other races) that are fearful of a 're-conquest' by mexico. I call it the 're-hispanification' of the US. Remember that a large part of the SW USA was under Spain/Mexico control. Is this a plot by Mexico? Not hardly but I think this whole 'fisticuffs' is leading up to this 'invasion.' To me, it's funny that all of sudden, there is a 'mexian' problem when the 'mexicans' have been here. The US is waking that there is 'three truckloads' instead of one. Now, the blacks are angry that a larger ethnic group is vying for power. The positive thing for african americans is the hispanics are fragmented and are not as well organized at the AA.
To the language issue: most of the immigrants do want their children to learn english (in the Austin area) but the parents seem to refuse to learn...
