Obama during the debate admitted that if he were to meet with tyrants in the world he would basically do what McCain and the administration already do.
The point is that the Bush administration, with McCain's enthusiastic support, took the position that they were not going to talk with rogue regimes such as North Korea and Iran. The Bushies somehow thought that calling them names and making toothless threats about starting wars was going to get them to stop their nuclear weapons programs.
That worked out real well with North Korea who tested a nuclear bomb and reopened the Yongbyon reactor. Bush finally got off his high horse and reopened negotiations with the Norks only after his no talk policy was revealed as an utter failure.
On three different occasions John McCain claimed that Iran was training Al Quaida until Joe Leiberman pulled gramps aside to correct him. This shows a dangerously uninformed politician who was in a position to gain experience in foreign affairs but apparently gained no knowledge from his access.
