Re: History of the Sexy Puritan

Adrasteia:

The archetype of the Sexy Puritan goes back much farther than Anita Bryant. Right off the top of my head I think of Hester Prynne in the Scarlet Letter.

Sexy enough to be desired but chaste enough to live by herself with her daughter.

The ultimate sexy Puritan. One hopes Hester didn't have Sarah's annoying accent.

The "Sexy Puritan" may be relatively new in public life and politics, but I met a great many of them in a Deep South small-town high school during the early 1970s. Was Little Abner's Daisy Mae promiscuous or presented as sexually experienced? I don't think so.
