As I mentioned before, even when we know the truth there is something else we need to have, and that is a goal of where we want to go. Do we actually want to reduce suffering? Seem obvious to me, but maybe not. Maybe replacing suffering with no emotion is worse for people than having the negative emotions. Humans are complex creatures. But I think at the most basic levels our wants and needs are probably about the same. We're just a biological machine, after all, with all the same parts. We've got a hierarchy of needs with survival at the top and moving on down.

And hey... don't count out science to someday be able to get into your brain and change those very basic wants and desires. Who knows? A person of the future may not even be recognizable to those of us today. That might sound horrifying, but maybe it's better in the long run. Or maybe I've just read too many sci-fi novels.
