Yoffe lacks nuance
by monthofmae

I've often found Yoffe's self-satisfied takes on the typically uninteresting Prudie questions to be mildly offensive. This one strikes me as particularly cruel, willfully ignorant, and damagingly dismissive.

Yoffe, I agree that you should have noted that the questioner's rapid weight gain is unhealthy, physically, emotionally, and, unfortunately, socially. I also agree that you should have noted that weight gain is something that reasonably factors into sexual attraction and romantic relationships, despite our idealistic belief that it should not. But forgo your sizeist disgust and smug complacency and ask yourself if you would ever want your daughter's considerably older boyfriend to dictate her body image, no matter her body size. You fail to consider, even for a moment, that this significantly older man may be bringing his own baggage to the table. For someone who pretends to be so intuitive, it doesn't strike you as interesting that a young woman would gain weight so quickly throughout one relationship? That it, in itself, could be symptomatic of mental, verbal, or physical abuse that the questioner may be enduring as you smirk? Are you here to help at all, or is this pseudo-sympathetic adviser persona just a better perspective from which to bully?
