Jowel, you are not thinking clearly. Here are some of your mistakes:

You questions Obama’s status as an American because you are not sure where he was born. That is irrelevant. Many Americans were not born here. As an obviously proud Hispanic, either you or a recent ancestor were not born here, either. You should know better. Besides, to be eligible for president, he must have been born in the US.

Your numbers are badly flawed. While it is true that Hispanics make up the largest minority in the States, they are FAR outnumbered by white Americans – nearly 5 to 1. Hispanics are not – as you claim – “very nearly a majority” in this country. Not even close. Although Hispanics do outnumber blacks, it is not “by a wide margin”. This is a factually incorrect statement.

You used quotation marks to implicitly question Obama’s status as a minority. This is wrong; he is unambiguously a member of a recognized minority group. On the other hand, perhaps your quotation marks were instead used to question the idea of “minorities” in general. If so, you point is moot and a president’s “minority” status is irrelevant. Either way, your sarcastic use of quotation marks is rhetorically inappropriate.

You seem to lament the fact that all American presidents have been white. Yet you claim that the president should “represent the majority of [the] country”. If you really believe this, then you should have no problem with the historical whiteness of America’s presidents since they have – as you seem to consider proper – represented the country’s majority. Make up your mind.

Finally, continued immigration of Hispanics into this country in large numbers is by no means assured. Hispanics migrate into the US largely for economic reasons. As Mexico, Central America, and northern South America are increasingly prosperous, Hispanic immigration will certainly slow, a trend that is already being seen. (A trend that will only be aided by America’s almost certain demotion in the global economic rankings as India, China, and the EU rise.)

Think. Then type.
