Isn't it about not spooking the undecideds?
by Radiotone

I would think the party would use all the prime-time television coverage on issues that would clearly resonate with undecided voters who, by their nature, are less ideological than "base" voters.

Undecideds may have strong feelings about Gitmo, but I'd bet its more likely they are undecided on that issue just as they are on their presidential vote (maybe they feel uneasy about Gitmo, but have a relative fighting in Iraq and think Gitmo makes that relative safer somehow).

The Gitmo opinion polling results I saw online are all from 2005-06; the issue has been lower profile recently.

I guess we'll see in November if this was playing it safe or missing an opportunity to convert some undecideds.
