Anse, thanks for your post. You’re right there some knee jerk reactions here as well as a discouraging lack of reading comprehension.
Weisberg’s article has nothing to do with whether African Americans are racist or not (though they do have a good excuse: for instance, have you any of you white guys been stopped by cops for the crime of "DWI" =driving while white? I don’t think so. Every African American I know, businessmen, professors, doctors, all had the unpleasant experience of being stopped while driving =DWB" Racism is defined as the attribution of moral and/or mental characteristics on the basis of REAL OR IMAGINED PHYSICAL characteristics. Racism does its harm only when allied to power, as when one group is enslaved and the justification for slavery is that they are subhuman. This racist ideology has left a deep and painful mark on our country’s psyche and its traces can be found in most Americans’ (whether they be African American, European American, Hispanics, Native American, etc) view of their fellow citizens and of themselves.
But that is irrelevant and that’s why I’m surprised at the many posts that don’t seem to have understood the article. Weisberg discusses polls showing that some European Americans who support every detail of Obama’s platform and would normally vote Democrat will not vote for him for the sole reason he’s black. This is what they are stating. The motives for African Americans to overwhelmingly support Obama are irrelevant for the election results because African Americans overwhelmingly always vote Democrat, so their support for Obama, for whatever reason, will not impact the results of the elections in an unusual manner.
I’m also surprised by all the posters who attack Obama yet have nothing positive to say about McCain. Now that’s pretty weird if you think about it!
