Ok, the Russians have proven they can execute a fairly competent military operation. Most important, and contrary to what many believed (mostly in the region) the U. S. cannot at this time intervene.
Let's not lose sight that this operation in Georgia was to send a message (more like a red star cluster flare) to the Ukraine and probably the rest of the Baltics, maybe even Central Asia as well - - and I bet they all got it loud and clear. Afterall, the reality on the ground is what it is?
I can't add or subtract to Mr. Kaplan's article. He gets it right.
As for our retaliation by going ahead full speed with Poland on this idiotic missle defense system. Condi Rice knows better, but she lost out to our V.P. on this issue, and instead of doing the right thing, she's back as an enabler. Having some kind of a kindred spirit with her boss who obviously, having been taken by surprise, has been pursuaded by his number 2, this was the correct action to take.
Russia knows in the long run, they are weaker then we are. They knew we were, and are, off balance, but also know we will regain our balance once again, upon withdrawing from Iraq. Which is why they took the opportunity now, and will milk it for all its worth.
There is however, some common ground between us. We both still agree on Afghanistan and the war on terror. Both of us do not want to see Iran aquire nuclear weapons.
There are other options: though Russia is now an energy exporter, the easy wells are tapping out. They will need international investment and technology to further get at what lies beneath Siberia.
Further, Russia craves international recognition, they underbid the 2014 Winter Olympics. We, and the west, can help or hinder - - yea, I hear Vladimer's an avid down hill skier (got that from the Russian desk).
