Re: No News Is Good News

I read your link. I disagree that wars start only as some diabolical scheme to make a profit. I’m not saying that wars don’t result in profits, particularly in a capitalist society but I believe they are a side effect not the cause. Based on this article you would think that any Communist nation would not be militaristic, obviously we know this isn’t true (USSR). Is AQ turning a profit in its war on the West? Is OBL’s only goal to make a profit? Are the rockets launched by Hamas, launched as a desire to turn a profit. Of course not, all wars are about power and control of limited resources (territory, oil, food, water, etc.) Most (if not all) wars throughout history are fueled by a competitive force that dives all species on the planet. Competition for power over limited resources, ie Russia’s move in Georgia is about territory, Japan’s war in the 30s and 40s was about territory (China) and resources (Dutch East Indies), Germany’s conquest was about Lebensraum (territory). War is an inevitable part of being human (as horrible as it may seem), it is a natural process driven by our inherent need for competition. War is indeed terrible for those individuals that are involved, but in the grand scheme of the Universe and life on Earth it is a necessary and dare I say healthy occurrence. Wars are how past civilizations became dominant and thus survived (Greeks, Romans, Persia, Japan, the US etc.) while others disappeared. Human history is dominated by war. War will never become extinct because it is the only means of conflict resolution that has finality, agreements and treaties can be reneged on, resolutions can be ignored or disregarded, but killing one’s enemies is perminant. Live by the sword, die by the sword that is our fate, life truly is War all the Time.
