The manufactured home market is quite different from what the article portrayed. Factory built homes can and do look very traditional and are built with conventional materials -optimized to reduce material and labor costs and specific to the customers tastes . Where do you want you electrical outlets, what kind of carpet, fixtures - everything. The cost per square foot is a fraction of on site built housing. It's been done all over Europe for 20 years - maybe more.

Manufactured home are not just double wides in a trailer park any more.
