What about the cardio?
by Muddydog

Its not that resistance training is bad. Obviously it tones you up, and helps with bone density, which is something people, women especially have to worry about as they age.

Yet, if you really want to focus on trimming down and getting healthy, diet and cardio is the way to go.

About 15 months ago I was 235 pounds, and could hardly look at myself in the mirror with clothes on, let alone naked. After deciding that enough was enough, I got myself on a strict, healthy diet. Then I added in my favorite sport, hiking. After a few months, I had lost about 30 pounds, and was really seeing results. I added in more cardio, mostly running, but also swimming and biking. I'm now down over 60 pounds on the scale, although I keep reducing waist size, without lowering scale weight. I do some resistance training, but mostly focus on high activity workouts, especially if they don't involve the gym. I still watch what I eat. I've run a half-marathon and am working on the training for my first marathon, to be run in two months.

Obviously my path to health isn't the only way. The author didn't have nearly as far to go as I did. Yet, it seems to be a mistake to focus on resistance training exclusively.
