MaryAnn:As I just heard on NPR, another problem is that the various disability
groups (not just ARC) are, like most people who favor censorship,
assuming that people won't "get" the point of the movie.
And I think that's the problem, along with the original poster's comments. I'm all for respecting other people's feelings, but at the same time it just feels like this is a bridge too far. And, without intending disrespect, the mentally handicapped have gotten a free ride in Hollywood. I can't name any movies where someone with a mental handicap is portrayed in anything other than a glowing light, and then the (very mentally able) actors who portray them are lauded for it. That, incidentally, is what the movie was trying to lampoon.
And along the lines of people that probably have a genuine right to get offended.. nobody raises an eyebrow about a man in blackface. I guess we are post-racial, after all.
