Compressing air is extremely innefficient. typically a 5 hp air motor needs a 50 hp compressor to keep it running.When you compress air it heats up dramatically.this heat dissipates into the surroundings and is a total loss ( unless used for some process).i have read that it adds up to as much as 85 % of the input energy.So unless you can supply mechanical motion to a compressor at very very low cost, it
wouldn't be a viable large scale option.
