That article by David Brooks, comparing Americans to Chinese, is a complete botch of a complex topic. He completely (and apparently willfully!) misinterprets the underlying research to make stupid and inaccurate generalizations. Language Log (<link>) has a good dissection of Brooks's incompetence; he generalizes from small samples--even confusing Chinese with Japanese--and derives conclusions from the research that the researchers themselves never made.
