on the contrary, Axon. Hirshman does not speak about "improving people's lives. She repeatedly refers to abortion as a means to the "value of women's lives". It's a subtle but important distinction.
Abortion to improve one's life is something an individual could do for her own benefit--it's a personal decision that may be agonizing and regrettable but can sometimes be seen as necessary, given your personal circumstances.
The "value of women's lives" is an entirely different concept that reeks of an ideological agenda, and based on the article it appears to be an agenda prioritizing the rights of women to do whatever they want, when they want to. That's a perfectly justifiable position, which I would support up to a point. But when you encourage abortion to serve this agenda, you're in creepy territory analogous to fascist eugenics.
As for my original statement, I'll admit it was all but meaningless when taken out of context. But in context, as a reply to CDBoch's post, it is perfectly clear. It is even clearer when read alongside my topic labeled "
I hope Linda Hirschman never writes the dem party platform," which is referred to in my original post and happens to be listed right next to this topic.
