Re: The EU's military & the Georgian war
by wgoconnel

"We wanted Europe weaker than the U.S."

I thought it was only Germany and Italy, but I'll take your word for it for other reasons than those I'm now prepared to speak about.

"I personally would let Ossetia burn before I chose to go to war with Russia over it."

I've read reports that Ossetia wanted to breakaway from Georgia to join Russia against Georgia's wishes, and so was inclined to think it somewhat justified if Russia re-claimed Ossetia - or at least not a big enough deal to involve foreign intervention. However, because Russia has gone beyond Ossetia and the other disputed province Abkazia (sic?), and begun the acquisition of Georgia proper, it seems likely to me, that it's quite probable Georgia, not just Ossetia and the other disputed province, will fall to the Russians without foreign intervent., which is not good because Georgia's a free country and an allie, yet this is another instance of an American military stretched too thinly around the globe.

So, my analysis, I'm sure, is somewhat flawed since I've recently learned I'm not much of a man of the world nor have accurate knowledge of the correct nature of foreign governments. However of one thing I'm sure, and that's that the EU represents the best bet for the stability of Europe against the Russians and everyone else, and that the EU will do for Europe what was not even possible before World War 2, and that is to Unite it against the petty infightings which have weakened it so unmercifully to this very day and brought upon it much trouble.

I appreciate your blog post, it was very informative and rational, thank you.
