Maduka and Cheeseburgers
by merliecat

I am stunned by what I perceive to be the attitude in this post. It's not up to Ms. Maduka or anyone else to eliminate or decide which choices are "legitimate". (See that McDonald's and Burger King are not legitimate choices.)

Poorer families do not tend to eat organic because they can't afford it. Accessibility does not equate to affordability. Poorer families eat at fast food restaurants because it is cheaper to do so. Whole Foods doesn't open stores in poor neighborhoods because there is no market for their goods. If folks like Ms Maduka would like to increase access to more choices (ie organic), then find ways to make it affordable. By taking away the choice to go to KFC on Monday because some group that can probably afford organic thinks it's the way to go is ridiculous.

Leave the fast food restaurants alone and find ways to make organic food a REAL economic choice. Find ways to make it a good business decision for Whole Foods to enter poorer neighborhoods. Open an organic farmers market and encourage vendors to go. Don't eliminate the choice because a FEW think they understand what is best for the many. By doing so, you aren't helping people make better choices, you are forcing them to pay for food they couldn't afford in the first place.
