Raven,
You said, "He feels that the common man has no right to self defense"
Your partisan hyperbole is showing. Here are some details of Obama's gun control policy, and a flat-out ban on gun ownership is nowhere to be found.
1. He supports the assault weapons ban... And do you need an AK-47 for hunting? For self-defense? Drive-by shootings may not be a fact of life for you personally, but for many people they are.
2. He voted to ban the sale of armor-piercing ammunition... Who wears bulletproof vests? Muggers? Deer? Or cops?
3. He voted to allow retired police officers to carry concealed weapons.
4. He voted to limit gun purchases to 1 per month... Which is a godawful inconvenience if you're trying to build up a stockpile.
5. He has voted in several different bills for better enforcement of already existing background check laws. I've known very 2nd Amendment advocates that would do away with background checks altogether. So why not close the loopholes, enforce what's on the books?
The most succinct quote I could find was this:
"As a general principle, I believe that the Constitution confers an
individual right to bear arms. But just because you have an individual
right
does not mean that the state or local government can't constrain the
exercise of that right, in the same way that we have a right to private
property but local governments can establish zoning ordinances that
determine how you can use it."
I don't see a repeal of the 2nd Amendment in this. I see a slightly left-of-center position that is anything from a radical departure from the laws we have today.
