Some excellent points are made here, but it all comes back to personal responsibility.
I am a single father of 2, and I love to eat out with them once in a while, when we can afford it. As long as there's a sensible, responsible adult present, the food that is prepared at home will always beat out restaurant food in terms of caloric intake, healthy ingredients, etc. (We control the sodium, the grease, the fat content.)
My family eats out for pleasure as well as for convenience. When we eat out, we usually tend to break the food rules more than we do at home because we are treating ourselves, be it fast food or a mid-scale sit-down restaurant. The trick is to maintain the rules most of the time, and occasionally treat yourselves to the naughty stuff once in a while.
Regulating businesses in this manner is just another way to remove personal responsibility from the consumers. "It's not my fault I'm fat! There are three Golden Arches within a mile of my house!" I have a sub shop, a donut shop and a pizza place all within 1000 feet of my house... Yet I have only eaten at any of them once in this calendar year.
Tell the food cops to lay off!
