The Press is Trying to Help McCain
by petermshane
In the tank for Obama?? Absolutely not. The most thorough and objective study, out of George Mason University no less, shows that the press has been tougher on Obama. CBS actually edited McCain's incoherence about the surge out of an interview -- why isn't that a scandal? The current effort to portray Obama as overconfident and hubris-ridden is an entire fiction. His "presumptuous" quote, to the effect that "the odds look pretty good at the moment, but the race will be tough," is 100 per cent accurate. What's he supposed to say?? There will be a lot fewer papers sold, newscasts watched, etc., if people think the race isn't close, so there is an institutional interest in making it seem close. In fact, the polls ARE close, but everything is trending Obama's way and Sen. McCain's campaign seems oddly disastrous -- as if he is trying to come across as someone actually less honorable and accomplished than he is. I think it a fair guess that the press admires McCain more than Obama, but the real operative bias is the bias towards keeping the underdog alive in the popular imagination. Right now, that's working against Obama.
