Actually Tony doesn't seem to know anything about anything. It wasn't that people figured out that they could shoot from behind trees that changed things, but rather that the firepower and accuracy of an individual weapon became greater due to rifling, breach loading, and other inventions so that people didn't need to line up shoulder to shoulder to generate any real firepower.
