Mamma Mia
by Emmy
After four and a half thankless hours of teaching summer school to 7th graders my girlfriend and I went to see Mamma Mia. Glorious! Took me right back to my first trip to Europe and wandering through Rome where ABBA's songs blared from every bar and trattoria. I couldn't believe that we had never heard them in the states. But I digress. I had a stupid grin on my face from the minute the movie started, and I found myself singing along. (I make Pierce Brosnan sound like Luciano Pavarotti, but who cares? It felt so good!) It was a delight. Meryl Streep can do no wrong. She is a teriffic singer. Pierce Brosnan is not, but such nice eye candy who cares? Christine Baranski is delightful. I have missed her since she left TV and I cannot afford Broadway. She also is just beautiful. I am 63 and was very happy to see women in a movie. Every time I turn on the TV I see very young people I don't know who are lousy actors. My sons call me a dinosaur, and other than Helen Mirren and Judy Dench, I never see anyone near my age in film. Other than Meryl Streep, that is. All the adults in Mamma Mia were near my age. Lovely. Thank you casting director. You made my day. I plan to return. Probably more than once. And I will sit through the credits again. I actually had shoes like those platforms once. Bought them on the Via Veneto in a shop that was blaring Abba, Mine had red satin cherries on them. Kids today really don't know how to live. If Streep's kids are embarrassed, they are fools.
