It may not seem a reasonable assumption that an orthodox
Chritsian, ex-doctor,failed poet and newly minted alternative medicine
practitioner may have been a factor in the 9/11 attacks but his was one of the
reasons behind the Jihadi resurgence in Europe and the
radicalization of a generation of western born Muslims.
Karadzic was responsible for a war that not only killed
hundreds of thousands; it brought levels of torture and brutality that had not
been seen since the Second World War. He organized the mass deportation of
populations. He presided over the use of organized mass rape as a tool of
terror. He made sure, with his sidekick Ratko Mladic, that the multi-cultural
and multi-ethnic Bosnia-Herzegovina was destroyed.
These were crimes that he will be tried for and eventually
found guilty, but they are also an indictment of the abject failure of the west
to live up to its newly minted promises of a "New World Order". The
daily news broadcast, especially in Europe, carried news
of the killing and bloodshed, but all Europe and the US
could do was watch and shake a fist angrily.
Then when finally motivated by the tragedy of Srebinica,
they acted but not in anyway that redressed the balance and brought justice.
They simply accepted the facts on the ground and forced all parties to agree to
it. Even the Dayton Accords were so hamstrung by political expediency that they
left Milosovic in power, with both Karadzic and Mladic to bask in the glow of
their Nationalist myths while evading futile attempts by NATO troops to capture
them. All three had essentially achieved their aims - a Serb republic inside Bosnia
, ethnically cleansed of anyone else.
This wasn't Tora Bora, you didn't need specialized heavy
lift Chinooks and some of the best soldiers in the world to find them. It was Europe,
and with enough effort and pressure it was possible. The political will was not
there.
There were others that noticed. Those who had come to Bosnia
to answer the Jihadi call. Those wearing green bandana's and fighting with, in
some cases, Saudi money and Iranian training. They saw the results of the war,
and they took those memories, made videos and distributed them to get their
messages across.
I remember once at a friends house in Leeds,
before the Srebrinica massacre, a group of us saw a video about Bosnia.
It was crude and had no over whelming Jihadi message but it showed those
pictures that the BBC would not show us. We were shocked, we were all around 15
or 16 and the images made us want to help those poor Muslims that were
literally being gunned down like sheep.
It also did something else. It reminded us that being a
Muslim meant you were a second class citizen, It gave the lie to the idea that
if you integrated, assimilated and accepted fully western values, it would lead
you to wholly integrated life in a European country.
Bosnians Muslims were fair haired and blue eyed. They were
some of the most integrated and secular Muslims in the world. They had no real
conception of a Islam beyond the sufi-light sayings of a few local clerics.
They drank, they sang, they were literate and generally cultured. They weren’t
immigrants who were darker, poorer and marglinalized. They were the epitome of
what a secular westernized muslim should be.
It didn't matter. Somehow, the tag "Muslim", had
put them outside the realms of people that could be helped. All the While men
in suits would say things that meant nothing. The British and the French would
do their best to help their old World War II Serb ally, with people like
Douglas Hurd (UK Foreign Minister) arguing against helping the legitimate
Bosnian Government by calling for a
blanket weapons ban and creating ,in his words "A level killing
field."
Srebinica sealed the image. Dutch troops a humiliation, NATO
air power , so effective in the Gulf, suddenly unable to drop bombs, and Ratko
Mladic patting young Bosnian Muslim boys on the head before setting his
paramilitaries loose. Karadzic and Mladic played NATO, its fear of losing men
and material, it essential weakness as they saw it. In 1995 on the BBC Karadzic
says in an interview with Ben Brown (in response to the indictment he is now
going to be tried for) "I am protected by my army, if NATO arrests.. me
then there will be a heavy price to pay for NATO troops."[please forgive
any inadvertent paraphrasing]. The fact are available in “A Safe Area: Srebrenica - Europe's Worst Massacre Since the Holocaust” by
David Rohde.
Things would have been different if Bosnia
had oil, Muslims thought. There would have been 500,000 troops sitting there if
they had oil. Thing would have been different if they had not been Muslims.
After all, the Royal Navy could send a war fleet to the Falklands
to protect a small settlement and some sheep, but alas not for 8,000 Muslim men,
or the concentration camps or the other vile deeds the troika ordered.
This narrative was seized upon by the Jihadis because now
they had a solid example to counter moderate Mulsims who wanted to integrate.
There was no point. Once a Muslim always a Muslim. You can dance, sing, go out
with girls/boys, quote Sarte and do all the things that you they let you but
the West will put you in a concentration camp and turn away from you.
Mosques were full of Bosnia
campaigns, with people volunteering to go and fight there. Hardened jihadis
from Afghanistan
and Checnya ended up going there. Above all, people who would have otherwise
turned away from the militancy began to think the Jihadis had a point, people
gave them space and time to expand their views. They used this space to begin
entrenching themselves.
Radovan Karadzic and Ratdko Mladic gave the world the legacy
of Srebinica which became word in the Muslim word that meant betrayal, failure
of the West and persecution. Srebrinica gave the Jihadis more recruits than it
they could have dreamed of especially young westernized ones. These young men
came with Palestine, Chechnya
and Bosnia as
their rallying call. One that can still be heard with Iraq
and Afghanistan
added.
The road to to 9/11 had many kinks and bends, but Radovan Karadzic
was one of the men helped fuel the journey.
