The Movie (1937)
by lump516
Not a screwball comedy, exactly. A very racy satire with some romantic comedy, perhaps. Script by Preston Sturges. Tallulah Bankhead as the lady in question, who wants a rich and powerful husband, not a baby (she has the latter, but not the former). Barbara Stanwyck as Bankhead's nice-but-sarcastic cousin who has more of a maternal instinct. Gary Cooper and Ralph Bellamy as the rich pol and ambitious assistant, both of whom might be the father of the baby (Astor has been friendly with both of them, so to speak). Joan Crawford and Mary Astor as their cynically-amused wives. Joel McCrea as the Washington reporter who wants to marry Stanwyck. Edward Arnold as the Wall Street type who winds up married to Bankhead. Directed by Mitchell Leisen
