Re: Even more radical solution to unwanted pregnancies
by chi_diva

It is not that your proposition is radical as much as it is short-sighted. Given the current state of affairs in the US, a condoms-only solution is greatly flawed.

1) Condoms are not 100% effective (even with proper usage). So, there will still be unwanted pregnancies.

2) Condoms are not always used correctly. Improper usage brings down effectiveness greatly. Proper usage comes from education. Oops, this is being stamped out in the place where it could do the most good—schools. If we want to delude ourselves into thinking that everyone is going to wait till marriage then we will continue to have conversations like this.

3) If a man chooses not to get a woman pregnant then he can very well get a vasectomy (for some men it would be doing the world a favor not to have their offspring in it). However, similar options are not being afforded to women. There are laws fighting abortions. Insurance companies aren’t paying for birth control. And some pharmacists aren’t filling those prescriptions. In addition, given some of the oppressive mores in our society, even women who would like to be sterilized are not being offered those services, because providers are afraid that “they might change their minds.” This is the real tragedy.
