And it may be, at least in many cases, that the further up you get in your field the easier it is to spot - certain condescending and/or dismissive attitudes that could once be attributed to your own inexperience or youth ("once I've achieved 'x' they'll take me more seriously") get a lot harder to explain away once you've gained the experience and achieved that particular "x".
Also, please don't presume that a big paycheck is an unequivocal indicator of respect - I once had a boss who gave me a big raise apparently in hopes that it would mask the fact that that hand he was holding out to "support" me was actually reaching to pull the rug out from under me. (Not that there's anything wrong with a big raise (she said in Seinfeld voice) ... in fact, when I came back to the job several years after he'd left my last salary before I left was the starting point in negotiating my returning salary ... "it's an ill wind that blows no good", after all!)
