You're correct if you mean...

...that evolution doesn't of necessity only proceed ina goal-oriented matnner to achieve a preferred and predetermined outcome. But you're wrong in suggesting that things evolve 'in any old way', since natural selection perates in a non-random manner (i.e., it will always select for genetic changes that confer increased fitness and against those that reduce fitness with respect to the environment the population exploits, at the time the genetic change arises).
